Industry experts discussed the most in-demand skills for cybersecurity professionals at the recent Infosecurity North America conference, Infosecurity Magazine reported.
One of the top skills hiring managers are looking for is problem-solving. Bill Hill, CISO of the MITRE Corporation, said that having “the right attitude to solve problems” can make up for being underskilled in other areas, according to the source.
The experts involved in panel discussions at the conference also talked about the importance of succession planning in the cybersecurity industry. Heath Renfrow, CISO of U.S. Army Medicine, said that he runs an intern program to attract and develop new talent.
“Retaining is just as important as bringing in new people,” he said.
According to Cyber Seek, there are currently 299,335 cybsersecurity job openings in the U.S., and a cybersecurity workforce of 746,858 people.
Some of the most common roles employers are hiring for are cybersecurity engineer, cybersecurity analyst, network engineer/architect and cybersecurity manager/administrator.
There is especially high demand for cybersecurity professionals in Colorado, which currently has more than 9,500 job openings in the field.
“The demand has just gone through the roof,” said J.B. Holston, dean of the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science at Denver University, in an interview with local station 9News.
