Several engineering firms were among the 100 companies included in the Canada’s Top Employers for Young People ranking for 2017, The Globe and Mail reported.
The ranking was conducted by Mediacorp Inc., which looked at the type of programs companies across industries had for developing young talent and advancing their careers, such as mentorship opportunities and education tuition subsidies.
Several of the engineering firms that made the list were hydro or electric power companies. BC Hydro in Vancouver employs 5,018 people and was commended for its two-year Engineer-in-Training program, while SaskPower in Regina, which has 3,331 employees, was recognized for its internship program.
Siemens Canada Ltd., Lafarge Canada Inc, Hydro Ottawa, Hydro One Ltd., R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd., StandardAero and Hatch Ltd. were also included in the list.
Engineering graduates in Canada have had a difficult time finding work in the field over the last year, according to The Canadian Press, with some companies scaling back their hiring efforts and professional development offerings to cut costs. However, short-term, contract-work arrangements at engineering firms have become more prevalent, the source noted.
