Centennial College to build new aerospace campus

With $44.2 million in government funding, the aerospace department of Centennial College in Toronto is opening a brand new campus with three aviation programs, reported Global News Canada.

With 14 of the top 25 aerospace companies located in Ontario, students will be immersed and integrated into the industry. Set to open in 2019, the campus will be important not only to Ontario, but to Canada as a whole, as the country looks to be a global leader in the sector, Premier Kathleen Wynne said in the announcement of the project on Monday.

“We’re trying to break down the barriers,” said Wynne.

In creating the new campus, the university will be able to triple the number of students in its aerospace program, reported The Toronto Star. Consequently, the Downsview Aerospace Innovation and Research consortium has forecast the creation of at least 14,400 jobs within the next 20 years.

The group also anticipates that the new programs will lead to $2.3 billion in economic activity during the same time period.

“The opportunity that Downsview provides for companies, colleges and universities to work together in close proximity on aerospace education, research and product development cannot be overstated,” said David Zingg, a professor at the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies.
